Living in Shibuya — an honest guide

Shibuya is the place every newcomer wants to live. Here's a no-hype breakdown of what that actually means.

Rent

Expect ¥80–130k for a sharehouse room, ¥120k+ for a 1K you'd actually want to live in. The closer to the scramble, the steeper the drop-off between buildings on the same street.

Quieter corners

  • Kamiyamacho and Shoto — leafy, residential, still walkable to Shibuya station
  • Yoyogi-hachiman — park-adjacent, slower pace, great bakeries
  • Uehara — for when you've had enough of the crowds but still want the Chiyoda line

Stations worth a second look

Nakameguro (1 stop), Daikanyama (walkable), Harajuku (walkable). All cheaper than Shibuya itself but borrow its infrastructure.
