Panduan Tinggal di Shinagawa, Tokyo: Panduan Lengkap untuk Warga Asing

Shinagawa is where convenience meets livability. As one of Tokyo's major Shinkansen terminals, it connects residents to the rest of Japan in minutes — and to the rest of the city just as easily. Here's what life actually looks like in Shinagawa.

Overview of Shinagawa

Shinagawa-ku (品川区) is a ward in southern-central Tokyo, stretching from the busy railway hub at Shinagawa Station southward to the quieter residential areas of Togoshi and Nishi-Oi.

Despite its name, Shinagawa Station is technically located in Minato-ku — but the ward itself is home to several excellent neighbourhoods:

  • Osaki (大崎) — a modern business district with high-rise apartments and Yamanote Line access; popular with corporate expats
  • Gotanda (五反田) — lively commercial and nightlife area; Yamanote and Toei Asakusa Line
  • Togoshi (戸越) — residential, with the famous Togoshi Ginza shopping street (Tokyo's longest shotengai)
  • Nishi-Oi / Oi-Machi (西大井・大井町) — quieter residential areas; excellent for families
  • Hatanodai / Nishi-Magome — along the Toei Asakusa Line; affordable and peaceful

Transport Links

Shinagawa Station is one of Tokyo's busiest transport hubs:

  • Yamanote Line → Shibuya (10 min), Shinjuku (24 min), Tokyo Station (8 min)
  • Tokaido Shinkansen → Osaka (2h 22min), Nagoya (1h 34min), Kyoto (2h 15min)
  • Narita Express → Narita Airport (~75 min)
  • Keikyu Line → Haneda Airport (direct, ~15 min) — one of Tokyo's best airport connections
  • JR Tokaido Line / Keihin-Tohoku → Yokohama (18 min)

The ward is also served by the Toei Asakusa Line (connecting to Asakusa and Narita), Tokyu Oimachi Line, and multiple bus routes.

Rent Prices in Shinagawa-ku

Shinagawa is more affordable than Minato-ku or Shibuya, while retaining excellent connections:

Room type Monthly rent (approx.)
1R / 1K ¥65,000 – ¥95,000
1DK / 1LDK ¥90,000 – ¥140,000
2LDK ¥140,000 – ¥220,000

Osaki and Gotanda command higher rents. Togoshi, Nishi-Oi, and areas along the Toei Asakusa Line are noticeably more affordable.

Daily Life

Togoshi Ginza (戸越銀座) is a highlight of the ward — a covered shopping street over 1.3 km long, considered Tokyo's longest shotengai (商店街). It is lined with butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, izakayas, and local shops. A genuinely neighbourhood experience.

Osaki has large commercial facilities including ThinkPark Plaza and a branch of Ito-Yokado.

Gotanda has a strong restaurant and bar scene, multiple supermarkets, and a well-served commercial strip.

Throughout the ward: Life, Maruetsu, OK Store, and all major convenience chains are represented.

International Community

Shinagawa-ku has a significant expat community, particularly in Osaki and near the station. Several international schools are accessible, and the ward office provides multilingual services.

The Shinagawa International Exchange Association runs language support and integration programmes for foreign residents.

Healthcare

  • Multiple clinics near all major stations
  • Jikei University Hospital is nearby in Minato-ku
  • The ward office maintains a directory of English-speaking doctors

Ward Office

Shinagawa City Hall (品川区役所) is located near Togoshi-koen Station (Toei Asakusa Line).

Hours: Monday–Friday 8:30–17:00. Extended hours on some evenings and Saturdays.

Is Shinagawa Right for You?

Shinagawa suits you if:

  • You travel frequently within Japan (Shinkansen access is unmatched)
  • You need Haneda Airport access for international travel
  • You want a professional, well-connected neighbourhood without central-Tokyo rents
  • You work in the Shinagawa business district or along the Yamanote Line

You may prefer elsewhere if:

  • You want a vibrant nightlife or arts scene
  • You prefer a more traditional Tokyo neighbourhood feel
  • You need direct access to western Tokyo (Shibuya/Shinjuku)

Summary

Shinagawa is Tokyo's best address for professionals who travel frequently — by Shinkansen, by plane from Haneda, or by daily commute. The combination of excellent transport, reasonable rents (relative to Minato-ku), and the genuine neighbourhood character of areas like Togoshi make it a consistently underrated place to live.
